#LoveWhatYouDo - Our “Why” - ACS Origins, Part 9

Erin Willett—

One question Mandy and I are asked all of the time is why we do what we do. It’s our favorite topic under the sun to talk about, so be careful what you ask for!

A short tribute to employees, partners, colleagues, and friends of ACS past and present.

The answer to this question is simple—we do it for the mission, our ACS family, and the community impact we can make with our platform.

First, a quick reminder of our corporate values. Until just March of 2020 when the pandemic first began, I personally delivered every single new hire orientation to new ACS employees. That’s how much we care and believe in our core values as an organization. So, what are they?

We’re a TRUSTED PARTNER. We act as the honest broker for our clients and provide them with the information and critical feedback necessary to support their mission. We value a commitment to the right outcome for the mission and have no other interests.

We’re the DOMAIN EXPERTS. We help our clients by offering consultant-level insights. We further emphasize that the whole once integrated is greater than the sum of its parts.

We RAISE THE LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE. Like they say, the rising tide raises all ships.

We offer PASSIONATE SUPPORT. Not only do we love what we do, but our passion engenders excitement from others that we work with and brings out the best on our teams.

We’re committed to OUTCOME-BASED TENACITY. This is our wordy way of saying we have “grit.” We at ACS are “in it for the long haul” and recognize that the successes of our customers are our successes as well.

We’re committed to ELEVATING THE COMMUNITY. ACS has the responsibility to influence positive change for the community in which we live and thrive. Through active involvement, directed outreach, and monetary contributions, ACS is a steward for the underserved population.

These core values may sound like motherhood and apple pie, but it’s those businesses that walk their walk and live their values that are truly successful.

Innovation and excellence through advanced technology is at the heart of everything we do at ACS. Just as our business has evolved to meet the national security challenges of our Intelligence, Defense, and Federal Civilian customers, so has our approach to community engagement and corporate giving. We are proud to support partnerships and programs that align with our company mission, vision, values, and strategic objectives; create value; and help better the communities in which we live and work.

Among so many other activities, we have sponsored local sports teams, youth STEM teams, and even the recreational kickball team of one of our employees. We have been able to provide charitable contributions since 2014, benefiting the Semper Fi Fund, the Fisher House Foundation, and the Arc of Northern Virginia, to name a few. We implemented a Military Careers and Transition Program to provide support, guidance, and opportunities to transitioning military service members and veterans whether employed with ACS or not. And so much more…

In 2019, ACS was thrilled to sponsor St. Peter’s Brainstorm, a Destination Imagination (DI) team comprised of 7 middle school students from St. Peter’s School in Waldorf, MD.

In 2019, ACS was thrilled to sponsor St. Peter’s Brainstorm, a Destination Imagination (DI) team comprised of 7 middle school students from St. Peter’s School in Waldorf, MD.

All this said, there is one standout moment that I’d like to highlight. In 2019, ACS sponsored a Maryland-based Destination Imagination (DI) Team. 7 bright eyed middle schoolers flexing their innovation and analytical skills. To secure the sponsorship, we asked that they meet with us virtually to present their case for sponsorship. After the meeting, one of the two team coaches (Elizabeth Robey, a Director at ACS) was approach by one of the female members of the team who stated incredulously, "they own a business —both of them—but they’re women!".

As a company, we are currently just shy of 100 employees. While we could have grown much faster and bigger if we wanted to, we have taken a deliberately controlled approach to growth that focuses on how well we are supporting our staff. In our industry, it often feels like some larger companies will hire you if you have a security clearance, a pulse, and your resume is seemingly qualified for the task at hand. As you can probably guess, at ACS our recruiting efforts look a whole lot different. We call it finding needles in needle stacks. Finding specialized resources with the right skills, qualifications, and security clearance… and then ensuring they’re a fit for ACS, and ACS is a fit for them, is no small challenge.

This is why we do what we do.
