Networking (or not) - ACS Origins, Part 6

In April, Erin was invited to the Government Big Data forum at the Mayflower Hotel. It hit all the right buttons; technology that resonated, access to new customers, and low price (Erin had wrangled free entry from the coordinator—hint, it never hurts to ask if you can get a discount to attend. Organizers want to fill up the seats and often recognize that small businesses just may not have the money to make payroll and attend conferences). So off to the forum we went.

Anyone that has been to a conference or a similar day-long event knows the schedule—a few speakers in the morning, a short networking break, a few more speakers, and longer networking break for lunch, rinse and repeat in the afternoon.

When the first break shows up, we both start checking our email and catching up on things we missed. Remember, we both had ongoing projects so this wasn’t out of the ordinary. Then lunch showed up and it became clear, through a series of “who do you want to go meet with?” and “no, after you, which booth would you like to visit?” exchanges that neither of us wanted to take the lead.

Somehow, we ended up agreeing that networking that day wouldn’t happen—so we went to go find some lunch.

What we discovered over lunch would change the dynamic of the business.
