In March 2013, the stars did align. I had been thinking about next steps in my career and Erin was ready to get ACS moving. In walked three matchmakers (who don’t know each other at all) singing the same tune – “Erin, call Mandy, you all would work so well together.” So, Erin reached out through LinkedIn and the time and place were set—see you at Oakton Starbucks!
After a very brief conversation it was settled… Erin and I decided we’d do this thing called ACS together. Anyone who knows me knows I do nothing on impulse, I’m a planner. But I know Erin and I know our matchmakers (thanks, John, Gary, and Roger!) and I knew it felt right. So there, over a Hazelnut Latte (Erin) and a Chai (me) it was settled.
No, Erin and Mandy didn’t grace the actual cover of Inc. Magazine in 2019. (And no, they clearly don’t take themselves too seriously…) But there was still plenty of reason to celebrate. ACS was ranked on the 2019 Inc. 5000 list at #436, the second of three consecutive years appearing on this prestigious list.
As a short aside, it’s amazing to me how very right John, Gary, and Roger were—Erin and I do complement each other. We share a theory that the best partnerships consist of balloons and tethers.
Erin is the balloon—if you’ve ever seen her mind at work when she’s “entrepreneur-ing,” you know what I’m talking about. But every balloon needs a tether—the person to keep the ideas grounded and achievable. The “where the rubber meets the road person”—that’s me.
What did we do with this new partnership? I’ll leave that story for a bit later (and it involves milkshakes).
